Diamond Rings- All the Time

Let the nighttime-moon-lit-bundled walks BEGIN! But no matter how hazy and disconnected I can feel, there is nothing that a walk like this, a talk with my sister, and a fun dance song can't fix.

Turkey Time

Finally the day has come that I get to teach FIRST GRADERS how to make TURKEYS! Then next week I get to teach KINDERGARTENERS the same thing! Nope, nothing can bum me out.

Today

Above are photos of open studio time at the elementary school. The last image is of the 7th graders' one-point perspective drawings. In the elementary, we are studying the work of Grandma Moses and doing fall still lifes, and soon we will start turkey projects, horse drawings, and Avatar characters. In the middle school, students are drawing trees, using watercolor, making mandalas, and doing clay food sculptures.

Welcome to Wednesday. It is the day of my week where I feel most subject to exhaustive craziness, when I feel the most raw. This feeling surfaces on my drive home after my evening class (tonight we discussed the "getting hired" processwhen I've been on the go from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m., when the sun has set by that time and my stomach turns with hunger. I'll realize the crazed part of me has kicked in when my music's incredibly loud, I'm bouncing in my seat, and I start laughing at myself. It is such a freeing, who-gives-a-shit feeling! When I get home, I usually fix myself a snack, hang out with my family, and then trip over my own feet, falling into bed.

Saw so many people lugging around 6-packs today, so I crave sharing a few cold ones with someone. Must... wait... for the... weekend. I also got a new book, and tonight I had a dinner of fruit. My stomach is full, so I'm off for a walk and then a good read!

A Relative Feeling

"As the dawn approached, I gave up trying to sleep. I threw a cardigan over my pajamas, padded out to the kitchen, and made some coffee. I sat at the kitchen table and watched the sky grow lighter by the minute. It had been a long time since I'd seen the dawn. At one end of the sky a line of blue appeared, and like blue ink on a piece of paper, it spread slowly across the horizon. If you gathered together all the shades of blue in the world and picked the bluest, the epitome of blue, this was the color you would choose. I rested my elbows on the table and looked at that scene, my mind blank. When the sun showed itself over the horizon, that blue was swallowed up by ordinary sunlight. A single cloud floated above the cemetery, a pure white cloud, its edges distinct. A cloud so sharply etched you could write on it. A new day had begun. But what this day would bring, I had no idea."

Pretty Lights - Finally Moving

• A song for a mellooow Friday late-afternoon. Give me my big hooded IOWA sweatshirt, I want my big hooded IOWA sweatshirt.

• My sister, Katrina, wanted the ingredients for the green smoothie drink I tried about a month ago. My favorite thing about it... the teamwork of cucumber and pear:

The Green Goddess:
- 1.5 cups coconut water
- 1 chopped cucumber
- 1 chopped pear
- 1/2 avocado
- 1 handful spinach
- 2 sprinkles cinnamon
- optional: 1 serving stevia

Just Do It

• Getting up early for teaching ---> great sunrises that make me feel like I'm in anime land.

• Started my second placement at the elementary and middle schools. Above, students' work from a Gustav Klimt texture lesson. My daily schedule has become a whole lot crazier with the littler ones than at the high school, but I love to constantly be on the move. The only downfall is that I'm caught off guard when I get home, sit on my bed to untie my boots, and immediately fall asleep.

• I'm even sleepy from typing now! There is so much work to do, but I just wanna zone out. Time to get my act together. I will wash my hair, grab a beer, and zone in.

Stephen J.M. Palmer

Above are a few pieces by the late Stephen J & M Palmer. His work will be exhibited at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids and will be up until November 9th. Tonight is the opening reception for the show, titled "The Obsessive Visionary Art of Stephen J.M. Palmer and the Sacrificial Love Society".

Lykke Li- Sadness is a Blessing

Saturday Morning

Good Saturday morning, to ya'. I'm back at my parents' home where the coffee is flowing, the tree outside my bedroom window is fire red and orange, and where my record player and records are stationed. Nice to get back to all this (and my parents, of course). I'm spinning this record now, "Harry Richards and His Islanders: Hawaiian Favorites". Very romantic and soothing.

Last night we gallery-walked in Dubuque, and I got to throw on the wheel of a local artist, Gary Carstens. He even invited me to help out with a wood-fire he'll be doing eventually. Here's a link to some of his work:

Tonight we're camping in Guttenberg and making stew, and tomorrow will go to the Luxemburg Oktoberfest. CHEERS!

Welcome to October

Fall is in the air! This past weekend I cuddled in blankets at night at a concert, tailgated for the Iowa Homecoming football game, went to Oktoberfest in Amana, and really enjoyed the changing leaves.

Some photos of my students' work. For color theory, the Drawing and Painting classes are painting pop art pieces. CAN'T wait to post their final work for this assignment. The last image is of a sketchbook drawing by one of my most creative students.

Right now I'm listening to Wanda Jackson and planning for my day tomorrow. This week is parent-teacher conferences at the school, so there is no school on Friday! How good of a feeling is that. What to do... I think I will see a friend, have a beer, and start a new book.

I miss throwing on the wheel! But watching the video at this link, I'm satisfied (for now). Very peaceful.
